As the largest producer of independent statistics, at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) we’re always looking for ways to bring statistics to life in fresh ways and to new audiences.

We’re expanding our Design team, a core part of the Communications Division, to take our visual storytelling to a new level with the appointment of two talented videographers...

The team will provide an end-to-end video production service to the ONS, identifying and prioritising opportunities to make an impact with video, motion graphics, animation and

photo content through our internal comms and external channels.

The Team Provide Three Vital Functions To The Business

Working alongside the graphic designers and Campaigns team and reporting to the Head of Graphic Design, this role will define a new standard of high quality content, demonstrating our values and telling meaningful stories informed by data.

  • Brand improvement - Building a bank of branded stock footage, developing a consistent house style and supporting guidance for ONS video publications. Contributing into a central Service Manual for ONS – a single source of information for building on brand ONS products.
  • Video support - Meeting stakeholders, advising on video accessibility and best practice, and identifying opportunities where video could add value or when it would be an unnecessary expense. Providing creative support to all teams to enable them to deliver better day-to-day services that meet the needs of all users and ensuring our communications are as accessible and inclusive as possible.
  • Video outputs - Supporting core services, work programmes, publications and events with video requests. Working closely with Campaigns, Internal Comms, Stakeholder Engagement and the Media Team to identify priority opportunities for video to make the greatest impact. Reviewing our channels and outputs and making strategic recommendations.

Videographers help to improve the communication of statistics, corporate news, services and events. Expert visual storytellers, they are able to plan, capture, co-ordinate, edit and

publish on-brand video content to an accessible standard that will contribute the delivery of

ONS’s objectives.


  • Ensure that video and animation is informed by research and insight and meets audience needs
  • Develop guidance to identify when a video or animation will add value and understand how to prioritise enquires
  • Manage own workload and schedule efficiently
  • Develop storyboards, plan and co-ordinate shoots with staff
  • Produce high quality video, animation and photo outputs
  • Manage film shoots, both in the office and on location around the UK and potentially internationally
  • Advise on equipment set up including audio and lights
  • Edit and deliver finished video outputs at pace, sometimes under pressure to meet short timeframes
  • Produce content for internal comms, social media campaigns and external events
  • Train and upskill fellow team members in videography tools and techniques
  • Contribute best practice guidance for filming
  • Work in partnership with a range of professions including senior individuals, deploying tact and resolve to achieve the results you need
  • Ensure work is effectively monitored and evaluated and lessons learned used to continually improve
